Vishal Mishra On Winning The Black Lady, 10 Years After Being Rejected On Indian Idol; Also Discusses The Trend #BoycottFilmfare- EXCLUSIVE
Music composer and singer Vishal Mishra is on a roll. The talented artiste has won his first Filmfare trophy for Kabir Singh and this was the right time to catch up with the man for a quick conversation
Vishal Mishra has rightfully tasted success post Kabir Singh. After winning the Star Screen Award, the music composer has won the Black Lady at the 65th Filmfare Awards.
In an exclusive conversation with SpotboyE.com, Vishal shares his struggle from being rejected in Indian Idol a decade back, to standing in front of a huge audience, receiving the Filmfare trophy. He also talks about the controversies that hit the award show as netizens opined that several deserving artistes weren’t rewarded.
Congratulations on winning the Filmfare trophy for Kabir Singh. How does it feel?
It’s surreal. There is so much love that has poured in from the audiences and from all over the world. I believe that when you get an award, it's not just for the one thing that you're nominated for, but for all the backlog. So it feels beautiful to receive love from the audiences, but when you get a validation like this, it feels all the more beautiful. I have been watching this award show all my life on TV. It’s amazing to be nominated at 2 award functions first time and win both of them, especially the Filmfare trophy as it's very prestigious. It's a good feeling to hold the Black Lady in front of the whole industry.
Going back in time, you were rejected in Indian Idol and today after a decade, you are here holding the Black Lady...
You know what makes me the happiest is that people are able to dream because of my story. I believe there is an underdog in everyone and theirs are the stories that are talked about the most. I'm so happy that there are a new crop of music composers/singers or any artiste for that matter. And when they see that here's someone who was not even accepted in the initial rounds of a singing reality show, and a decade later, he is winning the Filmfare and Star Screen awards, it's just amazing.
On the other side, the Filmfare was criticised for favouring only certain artistes and trends like #BoycottFilmfare made the rounds of web. Being the composer of Kabir Singh, did you feel disheartened that Shahid Kapoor lost out the trophy to Ranveer Singh?
To tell you the truth, I have been so elated in my head that I haven't thought about anything else till now. I don't really know what exactly happened. I was a part of the function and after my award, we had several interviews so I missed a lot of awards that were given. Then, we went for a party, so the mind has not gone to the #BoycottFilmfare trend yet; in fact I'm just getting to know this from you...
Don't you think Shahid was as deserving to win the Best Actor award as Ranveer?
Absolutely, but Shahid was outstanding in the film and so was Ranveer. See, when they give Kabir Singh the music award, they also talk about Gully Boy. So I think both have had their individual effects and it's up to the jury, the people. We are not the right people to even think about it. Since I have worked for Kabir Singh, I'm biased towards it, but even Ranveer was outstanding in Gully Boy.
Whom do you consider your inspiration in the music industry?
I'm a diehard fan of RD Burman. He is like the Mozart for me.
Yes, the olden era had melody to its songs, which seems to be lacking today...
Not really. I think Kabir Singh is a very good example of it.
Agreed, but such albums are a rarity as most of the songs today are remixes, with lack of originality...
No, the thing is we get to access all the music that releases today and it wasn't the case earlier. Back then, there were lesser number of films being made. The bad things weren't highlighted because it didn't reach people. There was only good work that reached us, it was outstanding without a doubt but I feel today, composers and writers are absolutely at par with the old ones as well. Today, there are nearly 20-25 songs releasing in a day and when a year ends, we only remember 10 songs. So it becomes difficult to cut through and shine out. I always look up to my contemporaries. There is AR Rahman who I have idolised all my life, then Pritam too for his melody. There's uniqueness in everyone but I have tried to seep in the essence of RD Burman and Jagjitji and I think it shows in my music as well. I'm so happy that I have done a song with Asha ji and I played the song on RD Burman's harmonium which she sang for me in Saand Ki Aankh, so I have been lucky.
